TRADITIONAL CHINESE MEDICINE
Unfortunately this service will be unavailable from the 1st March due to Maternity Leave
Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) has a valuable legacy spanning thousands of years and has changed little over the centuries. It is not only a medicine but perceiving human beings as a holistic concept. It not only offers a pathology perspective on physical symptoms but also the emotional, psychic, food and way of life that has led to that state.
Acupuncture is the most common practice associated with traditional Chinese medicine. It consists of balancing the qi (energy flow) by means of needles that are introduced at the surface level at very specific points on the skin.
The methodology behind acupuncture consists of the introduction of very fine needles at these points on your skin, until noticing the arrival of the qi and the different manipulations that are performed with the needles, in order to facilitate the arrival of energy where it is in deficit, or to reduce the accumulation of energy where it is in excess. Acupuncture can also help the human body to relieve pains, anesthetize certain areas and help with certain diseases.
The benefits of acupuncture are endless for all kinds of pathologies, from physical to mental (i.e. depression). Health according to traditional Chinese medicine is a state of balance of the body that is maintained by the energy fluid through meridians. Diseases can occur if the energy fluid is blocked, due to lack or excess. According to the Chinese conception, the vital energy, qi flows through the body through meridians, channels or communication pathways, and by the manipulation of the points, that are in all these meridians, is the basis of the treatment of diseases.
Acupressure is a technique similar in principle to acupuncture. It is based on the concept of life energy which flows through meridians in the body. In treatment, physical pressure is applied to acupuncture points with the aim of clearing blockages in these meridians. Pressure may be applied by hand, by elbow, or with various devices.
Auriculotherapy is a technique of using points on the skin of the auricle (external ear) to diagnose and treat pain and medical conditions of the body. Also referred to as Auricular Medicine, practitioners all over the world use this therapy to treat pain, addictions and internal disorders with excellent results. Acupuncture points on the ear are stimulated with fine needles or with earseeds and massage (acupressure).
Auriculotherapy is safe, non-invasive and has no known side effects and is widely used for pain control, addictions of all kinds, internal disorders, emotional issues, and a host of other problems. Whether used in conjunction with another treatment or by itself, auriculotherapy can be effective when other treatments have failed.
Moxibustion also known as moxa treatment, traditional medical practice that originated in China and then spread to Japan and other Asian countries. It is performed by burning small cones of dried leaves on certain designated points of the body, generally the same points as those used in acupuncture.
In ancient times, the Chinese believed that burning or heating certain points on the body increased circulation and relieved pain. Generally, points near large blood vessels, eyes, and ears are treated by moxibustion because acupuncture at these points is deemed inadvisable.
In modern practice the herb is usually crushed, wrapped in special paper, and, when lit, held above the point to be warmed or placed on the skin and removed before overheating occurs. A moxa stick burns for four or five minutes and is used to relieve pain and congestion and to provide an anaesthetic effect.
The heat generated during moxibustion helps increase the flow of vital energy also known as qi throughout the body via certain pathways known as meridians. In Traditional Chinese Medicine, stimulating the flow of qi is considered essential to achieving health and wellness. In fact, physical and mental health problems are thought to develop in part as a result of blockages in the flow of qi.
Reiki is a Japanese technique for stress reduction and relaxation that also promotes healing. It is administered by laying on hands and is based on the idea that a vital force of life, called qi, runs throughout your body. If the qi is out of balance, then we are more likely to get sick or feel stress, and if it is in balance then we are more capable of being happy and healthy.
Reiki treats the whole person including body, emotions, mind and spirit creating many beneficial effects that include relaxation and feelings of peace, security and wellbeing. Many have reported miraculous results.
Reiki is a simple, natural and safe method of spiritual healing and self-improvement that everyone can use. It has been effective in helping virtually every known illness and malady and always creates a beneficial effect. It also works in conjunction with all other medical or therapeutic techniques to relieve side effects and promote recovery.
TUI NA MASSAGE
Tui Na is an ancient therapy of traditional Chinese medicine, which restores the balance between Yin and Yang that restores in a local way and generates circulatory harmony of qi (energy) and xue (blood).
A Tui Na massage supports Chinese Medicine by highlighting its role in restoring the circulation of the vital energy of the patient. It is a manual technique that supports the diagnosis and treatment, within the differentiation of syndromes for Traditional Chinese Medicine.
Tui Na massage sessions usually last been thirty minutes and one hour, and normally take place on a massage table. Tui Na is intended to be both relaxing and invigorating. Some techniques and strokes used are much like those used in a relaxing Swedish massage, such as gliding, kneading, rocking, pulling, friction, and rolling.
Because it is based on Chinese medicine, Tui Na is also quite different from other massage therapy. Unlike existing Western massage techniques, Tui Na goes beyond the muscles, bones, and joints to work with the body on a deeper, energy level.
For injury treatments, it not only treats the muscles and joints but also restores the circulation of the life energy of the patient. It is effective at treating muscle contractions, stiffness, cramps, tingling, headaches, allergies, circulation and sinusitis. Tui Na holds the honorary position of Traditional Chinese Medicine in injury treatments.
Reflexology is a type of massage that involves applying different amounts of pressure to the feet, hands, and ears. It is based on the theory that these body parts are connected to certain organs and body systems.
In Traditional Chinese Medicine reflexology rests on the ancient Chinese belief in qi. According to this belief, qi flows through each person. When a person feels stressed, their body blocks qi. This can cause an imbalance in the body that leads to illness. Reflexology aims to keep qi flowing through the body, keeping it balanced and disease free.
Reflexology can help to reduce stress and anxiety, reduce pain, lift mood and improve general well-being.
In addition, people have reported that reflexology has helped them boost their immune system, get over colds and bacterial infections, clear up sinus issues, correct hormonal imbalances, boost fertility, improve digestion and ease arthritis pain.
Every day your body endures stresses and strains that it must work to compensate for. Unfortunately, these changes often cause body tissues to tighten and distort the craniosacral system. These distortions can then cause tension to form around the brain and spinal cord resulting in restrictions. This can create a barrier to the healthy performance of the central nervous system, and potentially every other system it interacts with.
Craniosacral Therapy (CST) is a gentle, hands-on approach that releases tensions deep in the body to relieve pain and dysfunction and improve whole body health and performance.
Using a soft touch, practitioners release restrictions in the soft tissues that surround the central nervous system. CST is increasingly used as a preventive health measure for its ability to bolster resistance to disease and is effective for a wide range of medical problems associated with pain and dysfunction.
By normalizing the environment around the brain and spinal cord and enhancing the body’s ability to self-correct, CST is able to alleviate a wide variety of dysfunctions, from chronic pain and sports injuries to stroke and neurological impairment.
CST is non invasive and uses gentle pressure on the head, neck, and back to relieve the stress and pain caused by compression. It can, as a result, help to treat a number of conditions.
It’s thought that through the gentle manipulation of the bones in the skull, spine, and pelvis, the flow of cerebrospinal fluid in the central nervous system can be normalized. This removes “blockages” from the normal flow, which enhances the body’s ability to heal.
CST can be used for people of all ages and can be part of your treatment for conditions like migraines, headaches, disturbed sleep cycles, insomnia, sinus infections, neck pain, fibromyalgia, mood disorders like anxiety or depression.
During the treatment, some people experience different sensations. Which may include feeling deep relaxation, falling asleep, and later recalling memories or seeing colours, sensing pulsations, having a “pins and needles” (numbing) sensation and having a hot or cold sensation.
Kinesiology is a gentle, holistic technique, which combines western and eastern therapeutic principles, to embrace every aspect of health and well-being.
The key to Kinesiology is muscle testing, which reveals energy flows throughout the body, identifies the underlying causes of problems, and indicates what is needed to help you heal yourself.
Whether you aim to increase your energy and vitality, promote well-being, reduce stress or pain, manage your emotions better, or even improve your performance at business, sport or learning, Kinesiology will work for you.”
By applying light pressure to a muscle and gauging the response, a Kinesiologist can let you know if something is beneficial or not. It is monitoring this response from the body that Kinesiologists call muscle testing. Three people with the same thing, for example a headache could, via muscle testing, show different imbalances. One could be a pinched nerve (structural), one an allergy (biochemical) and one a life stress (emotional).
Muscle testing is then used to show what is most likely to bring the body back into balance. This in turn will allow their body to deal with the headache. Then work can be done on maintaining this balance.
Myofascial release is a safe and effective hands on type of physical therapy that involves applying gentle sustained pressure into the myofascial connective tissue restrictions to eliminate pain and restore motion.
Trauma, inflammatory responses, and/or surgical procedures can create myofascial restrictions that can produce tensile pressures on pain sensitive structures called trigger points that do not show up in many of the standard tests (x-rays, myelograms, CAT scans, electromyography, etc.).
The use of myofascial release allows us to look at each patient as a unique individual. Each treatment session is performed directly on skin without oils, creams or machinery and focuses on reducing pain by easing the tension and tightness in the trigger points. It’s not always easy to understand what trigger point is responsible for the pain. Localizing pain to a specific trigger point is very difficult. For that reason the areas where the therapist is working may not be near where the pain originates or where you feel the pain most prominently. Myofascial release works the broader network of muscles that might be causing your pain. It tries to reduce tension throughout your body by releasing trigger points across a broad area of muscle and tissue rather than at single points.
